I picked up American Woman, New York Times reporter Katie Rogers’s exploration of modern First Ladies, in honor of Women’s History Month. The book is described as covering First Ladies from Hillary Clinton onward, but the pacing felt uneven.
Much more time seems devoted to Jill Biden than to the other First Ladies. And even in those sections, the narrative spends almost as much time on Joe Biden’s story as on hers. Rogers also seems to show a fair amount of disdain for several of her subjects in a way that felt unwarranted. It was strange.
This one was a miss for me. I would not recommend it.
