Pepper Mills has recently moved into a retirement community in Austin, TX, at the urging of her adult children, when she falls in love with her next door neighbor and then falls pregnant. Because she’s living in Texas she can’t have the abortion that she wants and is forced to carry on with this incredibly geriatric pregnancy.
I really loved Laurie Frankel’s Family Family, but Enormous Wings just didn’t work for me at all. It felt so heavy handed, like I was being hit over the head over and over again for 300+ pages . You would be hard pressed to find anyone who supports a woman’s right to choose more than I do, but I just couldn’t get into this story. I couldn’t really get a handle on who Pepper was. It felt like Frankel came up with a wild concept for a book and then didn’t take the time to really finesse it and get it right in a way that would actually give readers something to think about.
PS: Thank you to NetGalley and Henry Holt and Co. for providing me with an Advanced Reading Copy.
