I went into Erin Carlson’s I’ll Have What She’s Having with middling expectations. Carlson’s previous book, No Crying in Baseball, didn’t quite work for me, and this one landed in roughly the same place.
The book is billed as the story of how Nora Ephron saved the romantic comedy through When Harry Met Sally, Sleepless in Seattle, and You’ve Got Mail. In practice it feels more like a random assortment of facts about the making of three movies. Interesting facts sometimes, sure, but not quite the cohesive argument the premise promises.
Fine on audio if you want background noise and really love these films. Maybe the next best thing to rewatching them. But honestly you should skip the book and just rewatch the movies.
