I’m not entirely sure how In Love landed on my radar, but I’m glad it did. Amy Bloom’s memoir follows her and her husband Brian through his Alzheimer’s diagnosis and their decision to end his life through doctor-assisted suicide in Switzerland.
Bloom narrates the audio herself, which adds to the intimacy of the whole thing. Her tone is straightforward and a little sharp, which made her occasionally annoying as a narrator, honestly. But that’s also what made her relatable. She doesn’t pretend Brian was perfect, or that she was, just because he was dying.
I came away feeling like I better understood the process of navigating how to access this kind of end-of-life care. This is a short, captivating read that I’d recommend to memoir lovers, especially those with a soft spot for grief-y stories. And I imagine it would be particularly moving for anyone who has walked through a similar diagnosis with a loved one.
