Sometimes a book is blurbed so well that you can’t describe it better than the marketing team did. “Imagine if Monica Lewinsky had Kris Jenner for a mother” perfectly describes Grace Alexander’s The Lowe Job.
Lili Lowe is working for an MP and having an affair with him when she is caught on camera in a compromising position in the back of a car. Her PR-savvy mother Lydia turns the scandal into an opportunity — for herself, for Lili, and for Lili’s three sisters Iris, Stevie, and Kate. Hijinks ensue.
I first tried The Lowe Job on audio. Multicast narration, which I usually love, but I couldn’t get into it for some reason. Then I kept hearing comparisons to Pride and Prejudice meets Dolly Alderton, so I gave it another shot in print. And I’m really glad I did. Grace Alexander has a genuinely fun and unique voice.
Some characters feel less fleshed out than others – Iris in particular. But that’s a small complaint in an otherwise charming book.
Recommended for the next time you’re in the market for something light but also kind of thought-provoking.
