It’s here. My 2021 list of summer reading recommendations. (link to the full thing in my bio and details in Stories!)

I’ve shared 22 books across genres, new and backlist, that I recommend (for summer or really any time of year that you just need a great book to escape into!), plus a handful of authors whose books are all great for vacation reading. I think there’s something in there for every reader, including plenty of books you haven’t seen on every other summer reading list.

Now, the elephant in the room – it’s the middle of July and I’m just now sharing this. I had planned to post this in May and be ahead of the eight ball, but since then I’ve been interviewing for a job, got the job, and then have been getting ready to start the job (My first day is on Monday!). But I figured that if President Obama can wait till July to share his list then so can I!

I hope you’ll check it out and tell me what you think.

Also, what genres do you gravitate towards for summer reading? For the first summer ever I’m reading everything but contemporary fiction, even though that’s usually my go to at this time of year.

Am I the only one who totally freezes under the pr

Am I the only one who totally freezes under the pressure to choose the perfect books when someone gives you a bookstore gift card? What’s your criteria for those picks?

@bookish.bethany gave me a @bookshop_org gift card for my birthday six months ago and I only just now made up my mind and bought a copy of Tokyo Ever After. Thank you, B!! You’re the best!

And many thanks to @drquinnreads for sending Liftoff about Elon Musk and SpaceX. I’m honored that when friends now think of books about space they think of me!

The rest of my stack of recent #gifted books is also an embarrassment of riches so I’m sharing more about some of them in Stories!

Is it just me or are you reading a lot of bad “thrillers” these days? Mysteries and thrillers used to be one of my favorite genres but these days it seems like the market is saturated with terrible thrillers. They’re predictable with zero likable characters. But I’ve got a recommendation for you! One that’ll rinse the bad taste from your mouth of all those other thrillers!

I chose The Last Thing He Told Me as my May @botm pick at the recommendation of @ASWinn and because I really enjoyed author Laura Dave's last two books, Hello, Sunshine, and Eight Hundred Grapes. ⁠⁠

The Last Thing He Told Me is the story of Hannah whose husband Owen disappears one day out of the blue. He leaves Hannah with nothing but a note telling her to protect his 16-year-old Bailey who he has also left behind. (swipe left for a full review)⁠⁠

So many mysteries and thrillers these days feel very formulaic but this plot kept me guessing at every twist and turn. And it wasn't scary or unsettling like many books in this genre are. Also, the characters were super likable and I was rooting for them the whole way and cheering on the growth in Hannah and Bailey's relationship. In case you're not already sold, Reese Witherspoon has optioned it as a limited TV series for AppleTV+ that'll star Julia Roberts!⁠⁠

What’s your favorite technological device or household appliance? Really love your vacuum or air fryer? Maybe a fancy TV?

I know I’m preaching to the choir here, but y’all, I love my new Kindle.

I’m a longtime eBook reader but I’ve mostly always read them on my iPhone and iPad. I never quite got why I would need yet *another* device just for books. Until I got one.

I’m obsessed with how small and lightweight the Paperwhite is. With how long it holds a charge (I use mine for several hours a day and still only have to charge it once a week!). With how perfect the waterproof, anti-glare screen is for reading outdoors and by the pool. With the fact that I don’t have to use a million apps anymore since my Kindle books, library books, and NetGalley books are all in the same place.

If you’re on the fence about getting a Kindle like I was, or have an old one and have been thinking of upgrading, I’d keep your eyes open for sales around Amazon Prime Day later this month. (And believe me, it pains me that there aren’t non-Amazon options. But unfortunately they have the market cornered here and no other devices come close. I looked high and low!)

Ok, that’s enough fangirling for today.😹 I’m off to squeeze in a quick walk with my Kindle! (yes, I even use it when I’m exercising 🤦🏼‍♀️🏃‍♀️)
